Introduction of Mandi District

Mandi, himachalMandi is the second most populous district in Himachal Pradesh. The earliest mention of the town could be found in the inscriptions at the Trilokinath temple dating to year 1442 Saka or 1520 A.D. The present Mandi district is an amalgam of former princely states of Mandi and Suket.

Mandi is called the "Varanasi of the Hills" as about 81 temples with exquisite carvings abound here. The temples of Bhutnath, Trilokinath, Panchvakra and Shyamakali are among the more famous ones. The district boasts of many well-known places of importance. The Sikhs, the Hindus and the Budhists hold Rewalsar Lake sacred. In the historical parlance, when one thinks of Mandi, one must think of Suket because Mandi state was an offshoot Suket. Suket was founded by Vir Sen or Bir Sen who came from Bengal in the seventh century. Bir Sen built a fortified palace at Pangna, part of which still stands proudly.
