Pin Valley or Pin Valley National Park

Pin Valley National Park, Spiti, HimachalThe Pin valley is a National Park and has a core area of 675 square kilometers and a buffer zone of another 1,150 Kilometers. This is home to over twenty species of animals and birds. The highly endangered snow leopard is one among them. And other species include the lbex, Bharal, Red Fox, Marten, Weasel, Snow Cock, Bearded Vulture, Chukor, Golden Eagle, Griffon and Himalayan Chough. Pin Valley National Park is situated at altitude of 12,000ft in Spiti. Pin Valley National Park contains a variety of rare animals such as woolly hare, Tibetan gazelle and snow Leopard. The entire area is a cold desert, interspersed with a few alpine meadows.

Location : Pin Valley National Park is situated between 31° 6' 40" to 32° 2' 20" N Latitude and 77° 4' 21" to 78° 6' 19" E Longitude. This park is located in the cold desert area of Spiti Sub-Division of Lahaul & Spiti District of Himachal Pradesh. The intention to constitute Pin Valley as a National Park was declared in the year 1987.

Seasons / Climate : Being cold desert high altitude are winters are severe and experiences very heavy snow fall in the park area. In general Pin Valley Park area is much moister than Spiti valley. Hence it is very difficult and dangerous to approach the Park during winter season (Dec to Mar). April, May, November and early December are quite good seasons for animal sightings, because during these months the animals occur at lower altitudes. For the people interested in plants and geology, July & August is the best period. For this purpose one should be fully equipped with binoculars, warm clothings, sleeping bags, medicines and sufficient food materials.

How to Reach : There are two routes to get Pin Valley National Park.

Route No. 1: This route is open from July to October (Summer Route)

  • Shimla to Chandigarh to Kullu by Air or by Bus (272 kms)
  • Kullu to Kaza by Bus via Manali, Rohtang Pass (3978 m) and Kunzam Pass (4551 m) - 260 kms
  • Kaza to Mikkim by Bus or Jeep - 32 kms
  • Mikkim to Park Aea on foot - 10 kms

Route No. 2: (Winter Route)

  • Shimla to Tapri by Bus
  • Tapri to Kaza (park HQ) by Bus
  • Kaza to Park Area as above 32 km + 10km on foot

Nearest rail head is Shimla and nearest airport is (Bhuntar) Kullu.
