Kullu

Kullu, HimachalWhat greater feeling of romance and awe can one imagine than to be at ‘Kulanthpita’ – ‘THE END OF HABITABLE WORLD’ ? This is kullu, or Kulanthpita as it was earlier called. Beyond it rise the forbidding heights of the Greater Himalayas, and by the banks of the river Beas lies the fabled ‘Silver Valley’, the Core of an intricate web of innumerable valleys – each more beautiful than the other. With spectacular mountain scapes brilliantly clothed in sunshine or shrouded by mist, the kullu region is brim-full of natural treasures – rolling glens and mossy meadows, rushing streams and meandering brooks that provide tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, artists and pilgrims an escape from the heat and dust of the plains, kullu also provides a delightful shopping experience and is famous for its exquisitely woven colorful hand made shawls and kullu caps.

Kulanthpitha, the end of the habitable world, of yesteryears is Kullu of today. The Silver valley of Kullu lies on the banks of sacred river Beas. Breathtaking scenery, blossoming apple orchards, sway of wild flowers, flowing waters of Beas and much more makes God appear to be far more generous in distributing beauty to the valley. There is bliss in every step that one takes in this enchanted piece of land; there is pleasure in the whiff of its air and ripples of water in the brooks. Kullu got its vehicular access only after Independence and so has managed to retain its traditional charms, it is, today, a major holiday resort for the tourists-Indian and foreigners. Many HPTDC and private hotels cater to their needs. The town of Kullu (1220 m) is known for its Dussehra festival when hundreds of village deities assemble in Dhalpur Ground to present an unmatched time honored spectacle. Men and women in their colourful best, joyous and mirthful, can be seen on the occasion.
