Visiting Kangra forts and palaces and not visiting Pragpur, the first heritage village, is just unthinkable. Here are the medieval cobbled ways, the crumbling ornamental arches, mud-plastered and slate-roofed houses and an easy serenity of an era gone by. The village is named in the honor of a princess from the Jaswan royal family who had organized a revolt against the marauding bands.

Pragpur has magnificent havelis, mansions and Italianate buildings interspersed amongst lovely mud-plastered and slate-roofed houses and paved streets. The Havelis have elaborate designs, carvings, triple windows and arches, pillars and fortress-like entrances. Most of the mansions and havelis have bare bricks that are small. "Some of these mansions are about 300 years old," locals tell.
At Pragpur, a wonderful building is the
Garli, the sister village of Pragpur, is around 4 kilometers drive from Pragpur and can boast of fancy tile-work, carved wooden eaves, ornamental towers and tainted windows of green, red and blue stained glass. Together, Pragpur is a befitting tribute to history.
