The capital of the erstwhile princely state of Sirmaur, Nahan was founded in founded in 1621 by Maharaja Karam Prakash and this was the only state in present day Himachal Pradesh whose ruler had title of Maharaja. The remains of the original capital lie at Sirmauri Taal, near Paonta Sahib and this was destroyed in a flood, supposedly after being cursed by a dancing girl. A laid-back attitude and a clean and dust-free atmosphere are the prime features of the Nahan town in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
Today’s Nahan is a charming town which is also the headquarters of the district of Sirmaur. It has graceful houses, winding roads and several old palaces. The town has one the oldest municipalities in the country and this dates back more than a century. The Nahan Foundry, established in 1873 under the aegis of Raja Shamsher Prakash, remains a heritage enterprise with its old casts and machines. The

Just below the palace is the beautiful garden known as Ranital Bagh which is one of the most beautiful spots of the town.
