At an altitude of 2,621 meters above sea level, the village of Sangla lies just below the main road that traverses the length of the valley. Sangla village on its own belies the true beauty of the area. It is in the fields near the village that one can get a window to the beauty of the area - and have a wonderful view of the peak of Kinner Kailash. The Kinner Kailash peak is the said to be winter home of Lord Shiva. Surrounded by houses, and placed in the center of the village of Sangla, is the old temple of Bering Nag. The temple is an attractive wood and stone structure that houses the principal image of the deity. The origins of the deity are regarded to be a lake that lies high along the hillside. The temple houses well over a dozen different images and masks of the Nag, serpent deity and a host of minor deities. Peripheral structures are stores for musical instruments. One of the major festivals held at Sangla is the festival of Phulaich / Flaich or Ookhayang. Perhaps the most unusual of Kinnaur’s festivals - and certainly its most charming, this among other things, commemorates the end of summer and the onset of winter. The village sends out its members to collect flowers from the hillsides and these are then gathered in the village square. It is a time of festivities and traditional dances. This is normally celebrated in September-October.

Sangla is also famous for Kamru Fort. This fort was the place where rajas of Kinnaur were crowned. Now this fort is dedicated to Kamakshi Temple. The Goddess idol was brought from Guwahati (Assam).

Here are many high altitude treks that goes into the mountains south of the valley, some of the most famous being the Rupin Pass (4500 m, 15,000 ft), the Buran Pass (4700 m, 15,500 ft) and the Nalgan Pass (5000 m, 16,500 ft). This is where it is time to get your camping gear out and do some very exciting trekking.
