Streams and rivers bom to perennial snows and high mountain lakes in Himachal waters hold some of the most exciting game fish. The cold streams have some of the finest trout pools in the country and the warmer waters of the state are Mahseer territory, with a host of other fish species thriving along. For those intending to seek a release from the pace of urban life, angling as a sport is both leisure as well as a luxury to indulge in. It offers those quiet moments of communing with nature which one always longs for but is never able to get in those crowded hours.All hell breaks loose, like the turning point in a well-crafted plot when a fish strikes a line, set out with bait. The sport is all about giving the fish on the hook a fair chance to get away and the anglers skill is tested in making a game of it by fair means. As a fresh water sport, angling rules are liberal and the fee is nominal. Of the estimated 3000 kilometres of fresh water stream and rivers in Himachal about 1200 kilometres of them have been identified as Trout country. Both Rainbow and Brown trout, which were introduced into the cold streams by the British way back in 1863, have flourished ever since.
Tributaries of Beas River - Parbati, Sanj, Tirthan and Uhl; the Baspa River in Sangla valley of Kinnaur; and the Pabbar River in Rohru valley are rich in trout pools.
As the rivers and streams descend from the cold zones into warmer areas, we enter Mahseer territory. Mahseer is no ordinary fish but the undisputed king, which rules Indian waters.
