For sheer geographical diversity, few places in the world are as richly endowed as Himachal Pradesh is. Low rolling hills, just a couple of hundred metres above sea level, climb on to touch the core of the
Rivers in deep gorges and placid mountain lakes, thick forests and acres of scree, mountainsides draped with snow and green, Alpine pastures all form a part of this immense spectrum. This variety of nature also opens immense possibilities for a wide range of outdoor activities, sport and adventure.
There are day-hikes by the thousand-while trek routes follow trails that can last a couple of days and extend to a few weeks. These vary from gentle walks over easy terrain to gruelling expeditions. In winter sports, there is skiing, heli-skiing, ice-skating and tobogganing. There is the thrill of para-gliding and the test of stamina with mountain-cycling. You can go camping, fishing and play golf or take a safari by car, jeep or on motorcycle. There is mountaineering, rappelling and rock-climbing. There is a complete range of water-sports which includes boating, kayaking, swimming and river-rafting.
All you have to do is make up your mind and select your own activity. No special training is required for most things, age is no real consideration and all you need is a reasonable level of fitness. Equipment, training, instructors and special packages are available. And then, all this comes at a fraction of what it would cost elsewhere in the world.
